Tigers fall to 1-1 after 53-33 loss

Comanche took control early and never let Jacksboro into the game Friday, Oct. 14, posting a 53-33 win.

Jacksboro is now 1-1 in District 5-3A Division II and 4-3 overall. Comanche goes to 2-0 and 6-1.

The Indians scored on their first two drives on Sawyer Wilkerson runs of 48 and 46 yards to put the hosts in a 14-0 hole with barely seven minutes gone by.

After the squads exchanged fumble recoveries, the Tigers set up shop at the Comanche 30. Randall Bustos’ 26yard field goal got the Tigers on the board with 55 seconds left in the first.

After a Welch scoring run, Jacksboro marched downfield once again but a penalty and two incomplete passes forced a 4th-and-goal at the 11. This time, a sack of QB Lando Belcher forced a turnover on downs.

The Indians later scored on a Welch 22yard pass to Miguel Martinez. Martinez’s conversion run extended the lead to 29-3.

Each team scored late in the half, the Tigers capping a 78-yard drive with a 39-yard strike from Belcher to Kasey Ray Swan, who ran a nifty fade route for the touchdown.

Belcher had a career night through the air, throwing for 333 yards on 20-37 passing. Comanche needed just four plays to come back. A 42-yard pass setting up a one-yard Welch run to give Comanche a 36-11 lead at the break.

The squads exchanged turnovers to start the third, Baylor Laake’s fumble recovery giving the Tigers the ball at their 35. Belcher’s 63-yard strike to Paul Shackelford set up the junior quarterback’s two-yard run to pay dirt.

Comanchecountered with a 59-yard Wilkerson run two plays later. After a Jacksboro punt, the Indians drove 75 yards in 11 plays, Wilkerson finishing the job from a yard out for a 50-19 lead.

Comanche closed with a field goal. Jacksboro added a couple of late scores, a 1-yard run from Luke Sams and a 12-yard toss to Valenzuela, who led the team in receiving with seven catches for 134 yards.

The Tigers hit the road for Merkel on Friday for 7 p.m. game.
