Normally when the opposing quarterback throws for 329 yards and you’re whistled for 127 yards in penalties, there’s a fair chance you’re getting beat.
There was nothing normal about Jacksboro’s 42-21 win over visiting Tolar Friday night, except for the threat of rain which seems to be a part of Texas Friday nights this Fall. Both teams are now 1-1 in District 6;3A Division II and 3-4 overall.
Even without starting running back Mason King, who did not play for “disciplinary reasons,” Tolar was able to move the ball pretty well throughout the night. Senior quarterback Kannen Adams took to the air in the absence of King, going 20-28 and two touchdowns while rushing for the other visitor touchdown.
The knock down drag out battle began early as the Rattlers needed just 90 seconds to get on the board with Adams finding Mason Behrens with a 47-yard strike. The kick failed.
Jacksboro turned the ball over on downs on its opening drive but forced a turnover on downs inside its 15 on the ensuing Tolar drive. Jacksboro marched downfield on an 89-yard, 10 play drive capped on Dylan Thomas’ 2-yard run. Gio Salazar split the uprights for a 7-6 lead with 1:17 left in the first.
Following a Rattler punt, Jacksboro went on another sustained drive. Runs by Caleb Helm and Ethan Fudge set the table for sophomore Landon Davenport’s three-yard scoring run with 7:03 left in the first half. A Davenport fumble recovery gave the Tigers the ball at the Rattler 21.
Ke’Ondrae Sadler’s 27-yard reception on 4th and 24 gave the hosts first and goal, which they capitalized on three plays later with Dario Piedra’s 10-yard extending the lead to 20-6. Adams had 82 yards in passing in just three plays on the next drive, capping the series with a two-yard run. A conversion run cut the deficit to 20-14 with barely a minute left in the half.
Jacksboro would close the half with a 30-yard Salazar field goal for a 23-14 lead at the half. The squads combined for 37 points, 432 yards of offense and 137 yards in miscues.
Caleb Helm had 39 of his 74 yards to cap a six-play, 72-yard drive with a score less than three minutes into the third quarter. Helm’s score, which saw the senior break several tackles, extended the lead to 29-14.
After an 11-yard punt late in the third, Jacksboro was looking at third and 20 from the 40 to open the fourth quarter. Tiger quarterback Ethan Sanchez found Salazar on the right sideline and the junior took the ball to paydirt and added his own extra point for a 36-14 cushion just 11 seconds into the fourth.
A Thomas fumble recovery snuffed out a Tolar comeback, but the Rattlers would score again with Adams and Derian Morphew hooking up on a 16-yard toss. Jacksboro countered on its ensuing drive with Ethan Fudge, who had 81 yards, scoring from two yards out with 1:25 to go.
The Tigers begin a two-game road trip in Dublin, which beat Rio Vista, Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
