Tigerettes win pair to end the regular season

Wed, 04/28/2021 - 5:00 am

Jacksboro softballers swept a pair in the final week to end the season in a tie for Holliday for the 7-3A title.

The girls beat both Breckenridge and Henrietta to go to 11-1. The tie with Holliday was broken after press time.

Tuesday evening in Breckenridge, the Tigerettes took advantage of 12 Buckaroo errors and combined that with a nine-hit attack to best the hostesses April 19, 15-0.

Jacksboro went to 10-1 in District 7-3A and 24-5 overall.

The Tigerettes scored twice in the first and added a single second inning run for a 3-0 lead after three. Four runs in the fourth set up a big eight run fifth which ended the game on mercy rule.

Alex Holman got the win in the circle, scattering just four hits and striking out seven.

Freshmen Rylee Mathis and Kylie Tullous paced the hit parade with two each. Mathis had two RBIs as did Holman.

Friday, in front of a large Senior Night crowd, Holman tossed a threehit gem with 11 strikeouts as Jacksboro closed out the regular season at 25-5 overall with a 5-0 win over Henrietta.

Again, a two-run first got things rolling for the Purple. Hadlee Richardson walked, stole second and came home on a oneout single from Holman. Courtesy runner Charlie Pharriss stole second and came home on Rylee Mathis’ single. Mathis went to second but was stranded as the next two hitters were retired.

Jacksboro stranded a pair in scoring position in the second as Jaci Gann walked and McKenna McAnear beat out a bunt single. The next three hitters were retired to keep the score 2-0.

In the third, Mathis drew a one-out walk with Destany Valles slapping a two-out single. A groundout kept the pair holding the bags.

The Tigerettes doubled their lead in the fifth, Holman doubling down the left field line with one gone. Pharriss again scored on a Mathis single. Mathis wound up on third ahead of a slow throw. With two gone, Valles drew a walk.

With Mathis at third and pinch runner Ashlyn Nun ley at first, Gann singled home Mathis for a 4-0 lead. A flout to center prevented further damage.

A two-out rally in the sixth opened with Tullous’ infield single and Holman’s second double into the right centerfield gap brining her home.

Holman and her teammates didn’t let a Lady ‘Cat runner get past second the entire 99-minute contest. Jacksboro Coach John Bennett praised the work of his team but also tipped his hat to Henrietta, which was a much improved club from the first meeting less than a month ago.

“They had zero errors and much better than the first time we played them,” Bennett offered. “They play like that, they’re better than Brock (the probable first round opponent for Henrietta).”
