Behave yourselves at all times, we have been told, because you are never sure who is watching.
North Texas Football Officials chapter, based out of Wichita Falls, made note of classy behavior while Jacksboro is playing by awarding the Tiger football team its annual sportsmanship award during a ceremony at the Tiger Field House on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Chapter President Larry Schupbach said the award is given to a large (Classes 3A-5A) and small school (1A-2A) annually. Teams are nominated during the last chapter meeting by referees. Criteria used in the decision making include: player interaction with opponents, teammates, coaches, officials as well as coaches interaction with opposing coaches and officials.
Those players include not just varsity players, but sub varsity and youth players as well.
“It’s a tribute to the town,” Schupbach said of the award. “You young men are what football is supposed to be all about.”
Athletic Director and head Football Coach Brannon Rodgers said he was unaware the award even existed until being contacted by chapter officials earlier this month.
“It shows the way you act and carry yourselves is important,” Rodgers said. “The fact the award comes from the officials means a lot. It means you’re being noticed for what you do.”
The NTFO chapter provides officials for 22 11-man schools, 11 six-man football schools and youth football games in the Wichita Falls area, both regular season and playoff. The chapter’s 95 officials covered 689 varsity, sub-varsity, and youth football games during the 2019 football season.
