Pirates fall to Bucks in double OT

After coming off a 24-point loss to Perrin in the Graham Tournament the weekend before, you couldn’t blame Breckenridge for wanting a little dose of revenge on the Pirate ship Thursday, Dec. 15.
The Buckaroos were able to avoid the third quarter letdown that hurt them in the first meeting, but Perrin erased sizable deficits twice before Breck delivered the knockout blow in the second overtime to take a 7774 win.
Breckenridge i s now 6-8 on the season with Perrin dropping to 10-3. Breckenridge Coach Brent Lucas was pleased with his kids’ hustle in the game.
“We knew we had to hold 10 (Jack McCormick) and 11 (Dayne Thompson) down if we were going to win,” Lucas said. Our kids had a ton of resolve tonight.”
McCormick and Thompson had another 61 point outing for the Pirates. Breckenridge, however, did not have to suffer through the three-point barrage in the third quarter that enabled Perrin to break things open in the first meeting.
Breckenridge appeared to have the game put away early in the fourth leading 48-36 on a pair of Carter Smalley free throws. Perrin got within seven on a McCormick three-pointer and Thompson inside basket. McCormick then buried another pair of three pointers on consecutive possessions. McCormick later tied the game at 53 before Anson Rodgers’s bank shot put the visitors up 55-53. The squads traded free throws for a 57all tie with 31 seconds left. Breck went for the last shot but a Cam Escalon drive into the lane was off the mark as the buzzer sounded .
Three-point plays from Smalley and Lane Tinkle and a Jerry Lawson free throw had the Bucks up 64-57 with 1:54 left. Once again, the Pirates came back as Mc-Cormick’s free throw a Dylan Trammell basket and Thompson’s three-pointer got the squad within 65-64 with 16.3 ticks to go.
Tinkle buried both of his free throws after a foul to put Breckenridge up three with 8.8 seconds left.
Lucas said he told the players to watch for the three-pointer in a timeout but McCormick was true on his attempt from the top of the key with 2.6 seconds left to force a second overtime.
Breckenridge led by four with 1:16 left and had a chance to ice the game but missed some free throws down the stretch. McCormick had all seven points for Perrin in the final session but it wouldn’t be enough.
McCormick had 33 points and Thompson 28 for Perrin. Breckenridge had 22 from Smalley, 20 points from Lawson and 11 from Rodgers.
