Perrin girls lose opener

PERRIN – Visiting Cross Plains ruined Perrin’s girls basketball season opener Nov. 8, playing heads up defense and using a big fourth quarter enroute to an 82-25 victory.

The debut of new Perrin Head Coach Ken Thompson was ruined early, the Lady Buffs jumping out to an 11-0 lead and were never headed. Junior Guard Erika Hernandez put Perrin on the board with a three-pointer with 2:08 left. Cross Plains’ defense forced turnovers which led to easy layins.

The visitors shot 50% in the first frame, led by nine points from Tori Taylor. Kennadee Langham’s free throw would be the only other Lady Pirate point as the visitors led 18-4 after one.

Cross plains went on a 7-0 mini run in the first 1:05 of the second quarter. Things could have been worse but the Lady Buffs missed their first four free throws of the frame.

Perrin, which was 1-8 shooting in the first, missed its first four shots of the second before senior Aaliyah Brown found the bucket. Hers would be the only Lady Pirate basket of the quarter as the hostesses were 1-9 shooting in the second.

The visitors would miss their last nine shots of the half but, thanks to 4-5 free throw shooting from Taylor, still managed to take a 37-8 lead at halftime.

Brown muscled her way down low for buckets in the third quarter. She received help from Hernandez and Leddy Hill for a 13-point quarter on 5-8 shooting. Cross Plains continued to shoot at will but only outscored the Lady Pirates 14-13 in the third to take a 51-21 lead into the final quarter.

Hernandez scored the only points for Perrin in the fourth with a pair of baskets. Cross Plains went out with a flourish. Taylor tossed in 11 points and Kristina Shepard, who had three points in the first three quarters, adding eight.

Brown had 12 points and Hernandez nine to lead Perrin. Taylor tossed in 30 to lead Cross Plains.

Perrin returns to action by hosting the Perrin Tournament which runs Nov. 17-19. Perrin will try and pick up its first win of the season Nov. 17 when it faces Three Way in its tournament opener.

The Perrin JV,which also lost to Cross Plains, opens the tournament with an 8:30 a.m. game Thursday vs. Prairie Valley.

Other tournament teams include Victory Christian, Bryson, Bluff Dale and Forestburg
