Perrin gets back on ship with first win of season

Tue, 09/14/2021 - 6:22 pm

PERRIN – Throughout time, adults have tried to get kids to buy into what they’re to teach them with varying results.

In the early going of the Perrin 2021 football season, the young Pirates, with just five seniors, have resisted what the coaching staff is trying to tell them. The outcome was an 0-2 start to the campaign.

During the middle of Friday night’s home opener with Mineral Wells Community Christian, Perrin found itself in a three touchdown deficit. Somehow, the lightbulb came on and the Pirates came storming back to get the last two scores of the half and then held the Warriors to just one score early in the final two quarters to take a 78-34 win.

MWCC slips to 2-1 for the year.

Perrin Coach Ben Staggs said the defense buying into things after more than two games paid dividends.

“They saw that buying into what we were teaching good things happen,” Staggs offered. “the kids weren’t sure about our defense and didn’t trust us. We told them listen to what we’re saying and if we’re wrong, we’ll admit it.”

Three Perrin turnovers on the first three drives enabled the Warriors to jump out to a 14-0 lead. A turnover on downs enabled Perrin to get going.
