Perrin BB routs Bluff Dale

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 12:03 pm

PERRIN – Tyler Welch is not one to refuse a dare.

The Perrin freshman received a dare from a friend as he was preparing for his first at-bat Tuesday, saying if he hit the ball to the outfield, the friend would give him $1.

Money is a powerful motivator, as Welch proceeded to rip an RBI triple into the right centerfield gap, tying the game at one. It would also prove to be the start of a turnaround for the Pirates, who wound up posting an 11-1, five-inning win over the visiting Bobcats.

Perrin evened its record at 1-1 with the win while Bluff Dale slipped to 0-3. Pirate Coach Jeff Browning was pleased with the way his squad showed patience at the plate.

“We haven’t had much practice time, so it was good to see them show a lot of patience at the plate,” Browning offered following the 86-minute contest. “Even better was having a freshman like Welch step up. We had some questions about how a freshman would step into the lineup.”

Welch answered further questions later in the game, getting out of a runner at second and third jam in the fifth with a strikeout to end the game on mercy rule.

“It was a good opportunity for him and for us to see what we had,” Browning said. “He stayed calm and got in a jam but also got himself out.”
