Wed, 09/07/2022 - 5:00 am

The Perrin Lady Pirates volleyball team, ranked No. 5 in Class A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, kept rolling down the highway Thursday, Aug. 30.

Perrin upped its record to 12-5 with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-22 win over Mineral Wells Community Christian. Lady Pirate’s coach Rebekah Bland said momentum reared its ugly head in game three.

“I thought our hitting was on in the first two games but was definitely off in the third,” Bland said. “We had played our game in the first two games but got away from the way we play in the third.”

Perrin jumped out to a big lead in game one, using a four-point Makenna Mathis string to overcome a 2-0 deficit by the Lady Warriors. Pairs of points from Jessa Angelly and Natasha Frissell extended the lead to 13-5.

Perrin’s front court was solid with kills from Aaliyah Brown and Mathis moving the match along. The visitors got within striking distance at 17-12, before Angelly rolled off three straight, aided by a kill and block from Kennadee Langham, to extend the lead to 21-12 and force Community Christian into a timeout.

Frissell finished off the opener with a pair of points, including an ace on the finale.

Brown had a solid start to game two with a kill and a dink, which helped Perrin jump out to a 9-4 lead. Libero Erika Hernandez blew the game wide open with an eight-point string to extend the lead to 18-6. Two aces and kills from Brown and Mathis delighted the Lady Pirate crowd.

Two points from Mathis set the stage for a three-point string by Angelly to put the Lady Pirates up 2-0.

The Lady Warriors came out loaded for bear in the last set, taking a 6-2 lead. Frissell brought the hostesses back into the fray, however, with a five-point string for an 11-9 lead.

The visitors retook the lead at 13-11, but a Brown ace knotted the score at 13. MWCC took a 16-13 lead only to have Hernandez roll off three straight, aided by a Mathis kill, for a 17-16 Perrin advantage.

The Lady Pirates broke an 18-all tie with six straight from Mathis for a 23-18 lead.

The run included three aces and a Langham kill to seemingly put the game away. The visitors held on getting within two before Perrin was able to slam the door.
