Perrin’s varsity volleyball team opened a four-week summer volleyball league at home Thursday night with a match vs. Poolville.

The Lady Pirates, which had just seven players, gave a good battle to the visiting Class 2A Lady Monarchs but suffered a 19- 25, 25-14, 10-15 setback. In game one, Landry Anderson broke tie to give Perrin its first lead at 3-2.

Poolville jumped out to a 11-5 lead before McKenna Mathis rolled off four straight points, including an ace to close, to draw within 10-11. The visitors had another lengthy run to put the lead at six. Perrin would keep things close but would have just one more serving point from Natasha Frissell the rest of the way.

Perrin took control early in game two, using lengthy runs from Jessa Angelly, Aaliyah Brown, who was a front court presence as well and libero Erika Hernandez, who had the final three points to even the match at 1-1.

Sophomore Kenadee Langham staked Perrin to a 2-0 lead in the finale. Poolville went up 4-2 before a Brown kill cut the deficit to one. It would be as close as the hostesses would get, however, with the Lady Monarchs getting out to a 10-3 lead thanks to a number of kills. Hernandez and Frissell served up single points, the latter’s put home by a Brown kill.

Perrin had one last gasp, a Langham kill breaking serve at 7-12. Brown then served up a deuce to draw within 10-12. It wouldn’t be enough, however.

Matches continue on Monday nights the rest of the month before two-a-day workouts commence Aug. 1. The season then begins with a dual match with Bluff Dale and Saint Jo at home Aug. 8.
