It was not a good start for the Jacksboro JV Purple football team, the Tigers losing a fumble on the first play from scrimmage.
Things got a whole lot better for the hosts in a wild offensive first half. The defenses took control in the final two quarters allowing the Tigers’ slim halftime lead to stick in a 20-18 victory at Tiger Stadium Thursday night.
Jacksboro goes to 2-0 with the victory, the wins coming by a combined seven points.
The fumble would prove detrimental, as Jacksboro was slapped with a pass interference call and other penalties to set up firstand-goal at the Tiger four. Blake Van Campen went around the left side for a scoring run.
Peyton Kinman, who had a tremendous day running the ball, displayed his defensive chops with an interception on the conversion with 7:40 left in the first. Belcher and Kinman combined for a strike to move the ball across the 50 with a Boyd pass interference call moving the ball inside the 25. The drive stalled with a Boyd fumble recovery at the goal line.
A short punt gave the Tigers the ball at the Boyd 21. The run-pass mix continued to work with a pass to Kasey Swan and a Kinman setting up first and goal at the five.
On fourth-and-goal from the three, Belcher and Kinman combined through the air for the score. Belcher and Ryder Jackson gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead with the conversion just five seconds into the second quarter.
Just more than 15 seconds later, Boyd retook the lead on a 65-yard strike from Dylan Whitley to Aiden LeMasters, the latter wide open on an apparent defensive miscue. The conversion again failed with 9:39 left in the half.
On the ensuing drive, Belcher and Kinman opened with a 37-yard pass to the Boyd 31. Belcher displayed his ground skills going 12 yards on a keeper to the Yellowjacket 20.
Kaleem Howard came up big to close the drive securing the ball in the near corner of the end zone for a 20-yard scoring strike. The conversion run failed as Jacksboro took a 14-12 lead with 6:37 left in the half.
Boyd got its aerial game cranked up with a pair of Whitley tosses to set up shop at the Purple 15. Gavin Rosado finished the job with a seven-yard run around the right side untouched to the promised land. The conversion failed but Boyd took an 18-14 lead with 2:39 to go until halftime.
The winning drive started for the Tigers as Jackson took the kickoff 42 yards to the Boyd 38. Belcher and Kinman combined for 27 more on the first play down to the 11. Belcher and Howard combined on a touchdown toss from 11 yards out but the play was negated by penalty.
Belcher hit Kinman for an 18-yard strike to the eight. On the next play, Howard made a nifty play in traffic to take the ball from the Boyd defender for the touchdown with 29 seconds left in the half. The conversion failed.
