JV Purple routs Loboes, 45-0

Scoring on five consecutive drives is a good way to guarantee a win.

Jacksboro’s JV Purple football team did just that Thursday evening, winning its third straight game with a 45-0 whitewashing of visiting Cisco at Tiger Stadium.

Garrett Hultman’s fumble recovery gave Jacksboro excellent field position at the Lobo 35. Quarterback Wyatt Gavit took off on a 27-yard keeper for the touchdown with 2:01 left in the first. Nathan Rockey added the conversion.

Jacksboro received great field position on its next possession, thanks to a 55-yard punt return from Rockey. Gavin completed the short drive with a 15-yard pass to a wide open Eli Jonas in the end zone. Rockey added the conversion run for a 16-0 lead with 8:49 left in the half.

Defense by Lucas Cornish and Luis Balderama forced a turnover on downs at the Lobo 41. Balderama began to show his offensive punch here with a 13yard jaunt to the 28. A bad snap on fourth down hurt the Purple, however.

Jacksboro forced another turnover on downs late in the second quarter. Jacksboro shot itself in the foot with chop block penalty which moved the ball back to the Tiger 16. Balderama took care of business, zigging and zagging his way to an 84-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds left in the half.

The offense continued rolling into the second half, needing barely two minutes to extend its lead. Gavit found Nathan Rockey with a 50-yard scoring toss. Josh Salazar tacked on the extra point for a 31-0 lead with 7:50 remaining in the third.

Tiger defenders Gavit, Jonas, Balderama and Isaac Saenz helped force a Cisco punt. Runs by Balderama and backup quarterback Eric Piazza moved the ball to the Lobo 9.

Pizana later found Jonas with a two-yard scoring toss, Jonas making an acrobatic catch in the far corner of the end zone for his second score of the evening. Gavit found Rockey with the conversion with just five seconds elapsed in the fourth.

Fumble recoveries by Cornish and Addison Gould shut down Cisco drives in the final frame. Gould’s recovery setting up a 21-yard TD run from Cornish with 2:43 left to end the scoring.
