Jacksboro Girls Win Finale

Wed, 02/10/2021 - 5:00 am

HENRIETTA _ Pounding the boards and good defense will nearly guarantee a win.

Jacksboro's girls basketballers did just that Friday night in the 'Cats Den here, getting as many offensive rebounds as the hostesses had rebounds in a 34-18 victory.

With the win, the Tigerettes finish 6-6 and in fourth place in District 7-3A. Peaster, the District 8-3A champs, will be the first round opponent Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Graham.

The offensive rebounding, led by Traci Berend and Hadlee Richardson, enabled the visitors to get out to a 7-2 lead in the early moments. Jacksboro would miss its last seven in a row from the field, enabling the hostesses to get within one at 7-6. While Jacksboro was getting more shots, Henrietta was within one at 7-6.

The Tigerettes went more than six minutes without a score until freshman Kylie Tullous ended the drought. The aforementioned Purple defense kept Henrietta without a shot for nearly three minutes of the second quarter.

Berend's bucket got the lead back to five but despite the Lady 'Cats not scoring until a minute and change remained in the half, Jacksboro, which shot 21 percent n the first half, only led 12-8 at the break.

The Tigerettes, which had just two free throws in the first half, started getting to the line in the third. It's a good thing too, as the frigid shooting from the Purple continued with the squad missing its first 12 from the fields to commence the third quarter.

Brynn Pardue's three-pointer with just under three minutes in was the first bucket and gave the visitors their first double digit lead. The Lady 'Cats got within seven as, despite shooting just nine percent from the field,-Jacksboro still led 21-12 heading into the fourth stanza.

Neither team scored for the first three minutes of the final quarter. After missing its first six shots, Avery Bennett's three put the Tigerettes on the board with 4:16 remaining.

A nifty Tullous steal and layin gave the squad its largest lead at 16 and Jacksboro was on its way.

A balanced attack was led by Tullous and senior Alexis Holman with eight points each with Pardue tossing in seven.
