Good start so far

With the tough non-district schedule Jacksboro Head Coach Brannon Rodgers put together, including three Homecoming dates, it’s not a surprise some folks had the Tigers finishing below .500 heading into District 5-3A Division II play next week.

With a stout Boyd squad, an athletic Castleberry team, former district foe Wichita Falls City View and a Class 2A state ranked Wellington bunch, Rodgers obviously belongs to the school of “you’re not gonna get better playing nobody.” That has been the case as the Tigers have started out at 3-2, the setbacks coming by a combined seven points.

For those who haven’t been keeping up, here’s a brief summary of the season to date:

Jacksboro 13, Breckenridge 0

The much improved Tiger defense held the Bucks to 122 yards while getting just enough offense to take the season opening win. Senior Landon Davenport got off to a quick start, leading the team in rushing and receiving. Davenport and quarterback Jordan Yount combined for a 29-yard strike. Baylor Laake’s two-yard scoring run provided an insurance score as well.

Boyd 21, Jacksboro 16

A crucial fourth down marking was the final nail in the coffin as Boyd knocked the Tigers from the land of the unbeaten.

Jacksboro had a chance to get the ball back in the final but a ballpalcement on fourth down, that seemed to help the home team by about a foot, gave the ‘Jackets a first down and moved Boyd to the win.

Jacksboro 58, RO Castleberry 29

After a pair of defensive struggles to open the year, these teams combined for nearly 1100 yards.

Jacksboro led 39-7 at the half, scoring on all six possessions. The Tigers rolled up 394 yards of offense while holding the athletic Lions to 100 steps.

Davenport rushed for 156 yards and three scores in the win with Baylor Laake adding another 136 on the ground and Jordan Yount going 8-15 passing for 112 steps.

Jacksboro 28, WF City View 22

A fourth and goal stop with less than a minute to go sealed the Tigers’ second straight win.

While Davenport led the team in rushing yards with 169 on 22 totes and a 57-yard scoring run, it was Dylan Thomas who led the charge with three scoring runs who got Jacksboro the spark it needed for the win.

Defensively, it was the Randall Hamilton show as the senior linebacker had two sacks, including one during the decisive drive late. Thomas had a nifty little trip up of Mustang quarterback Isaiah Marks in the final drive as well to help secure the win.

That’s about it for this week. As always, thanks for reading.

See y’all down the road.
