Ecstatic doesn’t even come close

I was driving to work last Tuesday morning when I got the news from colleague Mike Williams that brought normalcy back to my life.

The fact that Class A-4A schools were being left alone by the UIL and could have a full Fall sports schedule made my heart leap for joy. I had commented in previous columns about being willing to take any sports watching I could get.

Last week’s babbling had me celebrating about the return of pro sports here. I still like the fact about playing late many nights as I’ll be getting home from football about the time things are winding up out West.

There is nothing better, however, than watching games live in a Press Box without a lot of distractions. It’s what will start my 35th Fall here vs. Breckenridge in barely a month.

It also means we will have our annual Fall Sports Tab in papers Aug. 26. Previews, schedules, pics and more from our three area schools and area teams. It’s gonna be a blast putting it together.

I think that would have hurt me the most if there had been a delay to the start of athletics. This going about four months with very little local sports has been hard.

Working on the Tab is always a lot of fun because you get to pick people’s brains and find out what’s going on in coaches’ heads. My coaches are always very open and honest with what they tell me (except for that coach speak).

I know Jacksboro already had a schedule out of what they were doing as far as two-aday practices were concerned. I hadn’t seen the others yet.

Everyone on my Facebook post out of Jacksboro Newspapers was very excited to get sports going again. We still need to practice safety first as we all know, it’s only going to take one kid getting sick and we’re all shut down again.

I want to see some volleyball schedules as the volleyball girls will be ramping up Aug. 3 for practice and Aug. 10 for real. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of mindset everyone comes out in after more than four months without any sports to speak of.

I’ve been grateful for my Texas Angels info from Coach T, as well as knowing when my summer baseball kids are playing at Swan Field (which I never even knew existed until about a month ago.)

Didn’t know anything about our HS summer softballers and their hijinks until I saw them come by Swan Field the other night. They didn’t ask where I was or anything.

Good to be back in the saddle this Fall.

That’s about it for this week. As always, thanks for listening.

See y’all down the road.
