BRYSON – The host Cowgirls won their 2nd straight Small School Shootout last weekend swept pool play Thursday in opening round action of the Small School Shootout. Brief summaries of all three matches follow.

Bryson 25-25, Goldburg 12-10

Opening the eightteam tournament, Bryson made quick work of the Lady Bears in the best-of-three format. Three-point strings by Tracy Hauger and Emery Fisher enabled Bryson to jump out to a 9-2 lead in game one. Add Louder rolled off another trio, aided by an Allie Orr kill, as the Cowgirls led 13-3. Senior Riley Valliant laid down a kill and then swerved up five straight tallies, including an ace on the finale, for a 19-7 lead. Two Hauger tallies and a Fisher ace sealed the deal.

A four-point Orr run, kept rolling by a pair of Valliant kills allowed the Cowgirls to start pulling away. Valliant received front court help from Isabella Moore, Hanna Perez and Louder. Louder’s three-point string moved the lead into double figures for the first time at 20-9.

Orr finished the job, however, laying down a kill to break serve and then serving up the final four points to open the tournament on a high note.

Bryson 25-25-25, Jacksboro 27-15-15

The Tigerettes got out to an early lead and held on late to get the game one win but Bryson rebounded to remain unbeaten in the tournament.

Lily Perez rolled off the first four for the Tigerettes. Single tallies by Avery Bennett and Charli Haak kept the lead at four, 10-6. Three points from Orr cut the lead to 9-10.

Valliant tied the game at 11 with Hauger’s pair, helped by a Moore kill, putting Bryson up 14-12. Three Bennett points put Jacksboro up 16-14.

Zoey Morrow put Bryson up 20-18 with Orr extending the lead to 23-19. Jacksboro held its own, using three Chloe Hart serving points to tie the game at 23. Perez broke a tie at 24 with a single. Jacksboro broke serve at 25-all with Bennett then finishing the job with a single to end game one.

Bryson used serving runs from Hauger, Emery Fisher and Louder to go up 10-4 and force Jacksboro into a timeout. Hart cut the deficit in half with three straight points but Orr had three points of her own to go up 14-7. Aided by front court held from Moore and Valliant, Perez used four straight serving points for a 22-11 lead to force another Tigerette respite.

Bennett’s three-point skein, aided by a Haak block cut the lead to seven but a Moore kill and Fisher serving pair evened the match at a game each.

Hauger’s eight-point run to open the tiebreaker never allowed Jacksboro to get in game three. Morrow moved the lead to 14-4 with a pair. Jacksboro made things interesting with senior Rachael Chalmers breaking serve with a kill and Haak rolling off five points to cut the lead to 10-14. The lead then fluctuated between five and seven before Louder put the final three nails in the coffin.

Bryson 25-25, MWCC 17-12

The Cowgirls played back-to-back matches but dominated Mineral Wells Community Christian in the nightcap.

Hauger, Perez and Louder served the hostesses out to an 11-4 lead in the opener with Valliant and Orr coming through with kills. The Lady Warriors never fully recovered from that.

The visitors jumped out to a 3-1 lead in game two before Louder’s four-point string gave Bryson a 10-7 lead. Orr then effectively finished the job with a six-point string, forcing MWCC into a timeout down 17-8.

Bryson 25-25, Woodson 6-9

In Saturday’s semifinal, the squad needed just 34 minutes to down their fellow Cowgirls, the 2nd place team in Pool B. Hauger got the Cowgirls off to quick starts in both games, including a nine-point run to open the match. Adi Louder moved the lead into double figures with a three-point run, with some help from two aces and a Valliant kill.

Orr finished the job, however, with an impressive nine-point string.

A four-point run from Hauger and pairs of serving points from Fisher, Hanna Perez and Morrow helped Bryson take a 13-3 lead in game two. Orr’s five-point string extended the lead to 19-4 with singles by Valliant and Fisher, ending the match.

Bryson 24-25-25, Jacksboro 26-16-18

Bryson moved on to face Jacksboro for the second time in the tourney in the Final. The hostesses again had to rebound from an opening game setback to win the last two games.

Jacksboro jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opener courtesy of Bennett’s seven-point string. Orr’s four-point skein brought the Cowgirls within 8-10 to force a Jacksboro timeout. Later, Orr’s sixpoint run tying the game at 24.

The Tigerettes prevailed, however to the delight of a large throng of supporters.

This time, it was Bryson who got out to the early lead; Hauger serving up seven points for an 8-0 lead, aided by a Fisher block. Bennett cut the lead in half with a three-point string with a Haak block keeping things going.

Three-point runs from Fisher and Orr, each with kills by Valliant, moved the lead to 18-9. Bryson led by as many as 11, using an Orr kill to go up 22-11 but it was Valliant’s seventh kill of the game on a Perez point which forced game three.

The nightcap was a back and forth tussle. Hauger staked the hostesses out to a 2-0 lead only to have Lilli Perez, aided by a Chalmers block, put the Tigerettes up 3-2. Pairs by Bennett and Brailyn Tullous put the Purple ahead 9-4 and sent Bryson into a timeout.

Valliant broke serve with a kill with Morrow’s single and four straight by Orr putting Bryson back up 11-10. After having a great day in the front court, Valliant rolled off four straight with some help from a combo block from Moore and Perez for a 16-11 lead.

Kills by Moore broke serve twice late. A threepoint Fisher string, including an ace, put the Cowgirls up 23-15. The squads exchanged sideouts to end the match.
