In a back and forth battle Thursday evening, Bryson used a five-run seventh to break a tie and held off the host Monarchs in a 12-9 win.

Bryson, which had five of its 10 hits in the decisive last inning, took advantage of two Poolville errors in the first to get on the board. Evan Ford reached on one of seven Monarch miscues. Garrett Pennington drew a walk and Noah Justus reached on another error to load the bases with one gone.

Ty McCormick’s single plated Ford with Pennington scoring as Jacob Hearne was hit by a two-out pitch for a 2-0 lead.

Poolville scored four in its first without a hit as control problems from Noah Justus hurt the Cowboys. The Monarchs added a second inning run for a 5-2 lead.

Bryson got the run back in the third. McCormick beat out an infield single and went to second on an errant throw on the play. Another pair of miscues trying to get him at third allowed McCormick to score.

The Cowboys took their first lead with a three-run fourth. Pennington drew a one-out walk. A second baseman’s miscue plated Pennington. A shortstop’s miscue allowed Dalton Birdwell to reach second and plated McCormick to tie the game at five.

Hearne’s infield single brought home Birdwell. Hearne reached third on passed balls but was stranded as a strikeout ended the inning.

Poolville took the lead back with a pair of fourth inning runs for a 7-6 lead. Bryson would tie the game in the top of the fifth after a two-out rally. Ford singled, stole second and came home on Pennington’s single. Pennington reached second on a passed ball but a popout to the catcher prevented further damage.

Things remained the same into the seventh when Bryson broke through for good. Kevin Martin led off with a walk but was forced out at second in place of Jameson Pierce. Singles by Ford and Pennington would fill the pond. A wild pitch and single from Justus would bring home two runs. McCormick’s walk again filled the bases.

Singles by Birdwell and Hearne brought home two more runs with a wild pitch plating McCormick.

Poolville got two of the runs back but Ford, who pitched the final three frames, picked up two strikeouts and got a fly out to center to end the 2:44 contest.

Bryson returns to Poolville for a rematch July 12.
