There’s one word that can be used to describe all the scoring plays in Thursday’s JV White game with Burkburnett.
Big.
Every scoring play in the Bulldogs’ 15-14 win over host Jacksboro came from at least 74 yards out. The Tigers’ two scoring plays were from 74 and 81 yards while the visitors came from 85 and 82 yards out.
Many fans were not in their seats yet before Burkburnett drew first blood. Abrum Davis returned the opening kickoff 85 yards down the left sideline to pay dirt. The extra point try was true just 13 seconds into the contest.
Jacksboro showed its gumption and heart against a bigger squad seconds later. Micah Mason took the second play from scrimmage and went 74 yards to the end zone to cut the lead to one. The conversion failed but Jacksboro was within 7-6 barely a minute into the fray.
Both defenses led the way for most of the contest. Sergio Romero made a key stop on fourth down on the sneezing drive to force a turnover on downs. Jacksboro was hurt on its next possession by a fumble inside the Burk 30.
Romero displayed his offensive chops later in the first with a pair of runs while a 25-yard run by 264-pound Darius Green on the first play of the second quarter moved the ball near midfield. The drive stalled and the visitors got the ball back.
Burkburnett moved the ball to the Tiger 10 but was hurt by a face mask penalty and a fourth down pass went incomplete. Jacksboro was hurt by an interception in the final minutes of the half to keep the score 7-6. After a Tiger punt to open the second half, Burk was hurt by defensive stops from Romero, Adrian Saenz and Joshua Ward as well as a Bulldog fumble to eventually force a punt. Mason this time went
81 yards on the right side to the end zone for Jacksboro to take its first lead with 2:04 left in the third. A Romero conversion run put the Purple up 14-7.
An onside kick was recovered by Aaron Lowther but the Tigers were forced to punt early in the fourth quarter. Burk converted on an 82-yard strike from Jordan Emro to Kaleb Roberts for a wide open touchdown strike with 6:09 to go. Patrick Bently’s conversion run put the visitors up 15-14.
Mason was moved to quarterback and his feet kept the Tigers moving as did Romero runs across the Bulldog 40. The drive would stall into a turnover on downs and the visitors would run out the clock.
