Babblings: Trying to stay warm

Tue, 02/25/2020 - 12:02 pm

After some pretty good rounds of precipitation in recent weeks, I was wondering if we would get in the annual Tigerettes Classic softball tournament.

Teams come from all over the area to take part, saying it’s a good barometer for where their teams are in the opening week of the season. With girls basketball still going on, it’s interesting to see what teams will be able to put on the field.

Coaches have told me this early tournament can give an idea of someone they hadn’t planned on keeping on varsity a chance to shine and possibly see some playing time down the road. You never know.

With hard work and lighter rain totals than expected in the days right before the event, the tournament went on as planned. Fortunately, the sun came out as well and made the weather for most of the weekend pretty solid, albeit a bit on the cool side.

We’ve had tournaments where the temps are warm but you end up swallowing a ton of sand with a 20-25 mile per hour south wind. This year, temps were below normal the whole time but the winds weren’t bad and coming out of the north most of the time.

Jacksboro was not at full strength with many of their expected starters having just one day after their basketball season ended before hitting the field. They continued their non-district warmup with a home game vs. Bridgeport Tuesday night (no results as of press time).

With all the talk of spring sports, more of them start this coming week. JHS baseball and track will both open their season tomorrow in Alvord. Perrin is also scheduled to take part in the six-team tournament which runs through Saturday.

Thursday, JHS plays at 2 p.m. vs. CCA and 4 p.m. vs. Perrin. Perrin also plays at 12 noon vs. CCA.

Friday, JHS plays at 3 p.m. vs. All Saints with Perrin playing at 11 a.m. vs. Nocona. Saturday. Jacksboro plays at 1 p.m. vs. the host Bulldogs with Perrin following at 3 p.m. vs. All Saints.

Those wanting to stay closer to home can head to Bryson for their track meet, the school hosting a meet for both junior high and high school students. The meet starts at 3:30 p.m. Good luck to all.

That’s about it for this week. As always, thanks for reading.

See y’all down the road.
