Ready to say ‘O Canada’

Wed, 08/05/2020 - 5:00 am

Before we get started, I’m not saying I hate America by my headline. If anything, far from it.

As many folks may have noticed, we have some pro sports going on right now. It’s a good thing in some respects but definitely not in others.

The action has been good. Baseball’s opening weekend had my Tigers winning a series on the road in Cinicnnati. They then come home and lead 5-1 vs. Kansas City and lose 14-6.

Didn’t think I’d see my Tigers at .500 at any point after Opening Day. Oh well, hopefully they’ll stay on the same stretch and continue to improve.

Along with baseball, I’m glad to see some hockey firing up in the next few days. My Red Wings weren’t fortunate enough to qualify for the playoff style format season.

Living outside Dallas, I have become a casual observer of the Rangers for a few years. Not hating them but definitely not interested like my Detroit teams.

Being a hockey fan, I watch more Stars since they are on with a degree of regularity AND made the postseason. Because the Stars made the top four of the Western Conference, they get a first-round bye and will play the other top 3 seeds to be re-seeded into a normal eight-seed playoff tournament.

Because of the lack of COVID cases in Canada, the entire NHL season will be finished up in Canada. The Western Conference will play in Edmonton with the Eastern Conference taking place in Toronto. ’O Canada’ is the Canadian National Anthem. I think many of you thought this was going to be a political column about athletes here kneeling for the National Anthem or, in some cases, just walking off the court while the song is playing.

Living so close to Canada while growing up, I can sing the Star Spangled Banner and O Canada equally as badly. With everything being shut down for the forseeable future as far as attendance at events, it’s still nice to know that we can watch sports of some type.

Live sports should be firing up here pretty quick, maybe by the time of my next column and that will also be cause for singing.

That’s about it for this week. As always, thanks for reading.

See y’all down the road.
