Letter to the editor: Food pantry update

Fri, 04/28/2017 - 5:24 pm

The Jacksboro Community Food Pantry began its fifth year of distribution in January 2017. For the first quarter JCFP served 17,715 meals to families in Jacksboro. All thanks be to God, we were able to put a five day supply of breakfast, lunch and dinner on the table for just 22 cents per meal this quarter! Once again, the donations of food and money for food helped everyone in Jack County have access to food.  We could not be more proud of the work done in Jacksboro by the local churches and volunteers who not only provide food, but spiritual support that we pray will change lives, as well as prevent any/everyone from going to bed hungry living in the heart of our beloved Texas.

You may remember, four years ago (election year) there was a shortage of food availability at the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank, this year the same sad song plays again. With that having been said, it is more important than ever for our community to support the 25th Annual Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive scheduled for Saturday, May 13.

According to the National Association of Letter Carriers’ website, since 1993, when the national food drive began, letter carriers in every part of the country have worked with family members, friends, other postal co-workers and allies to use the second Saturday in May as a day to give something back to the communities that know and trust us.

Last year, the food drive collected a record 80 million pounds of nonperishable food, raising the total amount of donations picked up over the quarter-century history of the drive to more than 1.5 billion pounds.

By the time our national food drive rolls around each year, the shelves of food pantries and other charitable organizations often are nearly empty, turning our hard work on Food Drive Day into a much-needed replenishment with summer fast approaching.

Non-perishable foods suggested (no glass containers please):

Meals in a can (soup, stew, chili, spaghettis with meat, etc.)

Tuna/chicken

Peanut butter & jelly

Cereal/pop tarts/breakfast bars

Pasta/Pasta Sauce

Rice/Beans

Canned fruit/vegetables

Volunteers will also be available Monday, May 15th at 10 a.m. for the regularly scheduled third Monday Distribution Day to receive donations.  Please do not hesitate to call/email questions, concerns, donations and volunteer opportunities to serve.

Bless you and thank you for all that you do,

James 2:15-17

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
