Dear Editor,
In these controversial and troubled times, perhaps some words from our greatest leaders might deserve consideration:
“Let us go forth to lead the land we love,” John F. Kennedy (1961);
“With Malice toward none and charity for all and with firmness in the right as
God gives us to see the right, let us bind up the nation’s wounds…. And do all that is possible to have a just and lasting peace…,” Abraham Lincoln (1865, 2 nd
Inaugural);
“Let us here highly resolve that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom,”
Abe Lincoln (1863, Gettysburg Address);
“Too often we honor in our public discourse swagger and bluster and boast….
And when we preach that any man is a lesser man not deserving of dignity, then we do not promote community but division into rival camps and not peace, but retaliation,” Senator Robert F. Kennedy (1968, Speech on Non-Violence); and
“In the difficult times, it is wise to ask what kind of country we are and what kind of country we would like to become. What the United States needs is not hatred, division, or violence, but rather is love, compassion, and brotherhood,”
Robert F. Kennedy (1968).
Sincerely,
Michael Mask
