Sgt. Walter Stephen West

Sgt. Walter Stephen West, 67, passed away at his home in Bryson Monday, Aug. 10. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at the Young County Cowboy Church. Interment followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Senate. McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday Aug.15.

Walt was born in Corpus Christi on Sept. 22, 1953, to the late William West and Ellen Hunt. Walt had been a certified peace officer since 1975. He worked with Arlington Police Department, Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department, as well as numerous task forces.

He was a certified Instructor with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, had his Master Police Officer Certification, and supervised the Tarrant Regional Auto Crimes Task Force, and later became Commander of the Task Force. Sgt. West supervised Narcotics, SWAT, Explosive Ordinance Disposed, K-9, and Mounted Patrol Units. Walt continued as a reserve officer after his retirement, staying active with the Auto Theft Task Force.

He loved working with his son Clint, at the Wildcatter Ranch for the last two and a half years. He married Cheryl Scott, and together they have three children. Walt will be dearly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl West; daughter Kristen West, of Weatherford; two sons, Clint West and wife Tessa, of Bryson, Matthew West and wife Britney, of Prosper; two brothers, Dan West, of Charlottesville, Va., Paul West, and wife Briget, of El Paso; three sisters; Betty Ann Hulson and husband Terrill, of Edmond, OK, Carol Heflin and husband Richard, of Pilot Point, Robin Brinkley, and husband Shay,of Burnet; as well as two grandchildren, Savannah Sonderby and Colt West.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Mickey West; and two brothers, Bobby West and Billy Fletcher.
