She was a Congregationalist, a graduate of Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, and an inveterate traveler, who had visited every state in the United States and Mexico, and every country in Central America.

She was predeceased by a son, James Merriman Kelsay in 2008, and husband, Royal Edward Kelsay in 2015, and is survived by one daughter, Janet Elaine Kelsay of Dallas, two sons, Royal Edward Kelsay III of Divide, Colorado, and Douglas Martin Kelsay of Bastrop, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Virginia Hess Fender of Glenview, Illinois, one niece and one nephew.
