Granvel “Grant” Morris Wells, 95, passed away from natural causes Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23. Lonny Hawkins officiated at Antelope United Methodist Church of Antelope. Arrangements were under the direction of Coker Funeral Home in Jacksboro, Texas. Interment followed at Shannon Cemetery.

Grant was born on Aug. 29,1925 to Irl and Effie (Neysmith) Wells of Jermyn, Texas. He was raised near Winn Hill and entered Jermyn Elementary School in the fall of 1931. In 1943, he was transferred to Jacksboro High School and left after the 10th grade to work with his father. Grant enlisted in the U.S. Air Corp in 1944 and after four months was shipped out to England during some of the heaviest bombing England suffered during World War II. Ten months later he was sent to Orly Field in Paris, France where he spent the remaining time in the service as C MotorSargent.

Grant met Sarah Copeland on Feb. 4, 1948 at a volleyball game in Antelope. On Feb. 7 they had their first date and after a six-month courtship, the couple married on Aug. 7, 1948. One year later they welcomed their only child Gary. In their early years, the couple lived in Jermyn and Jacksboro until they built a home in rural Clay County on family land in 1954. Grant entered carpenter school on the GI Bill and learned the trade. He became very good at carpentry and became a carpenter foreman, overseeing several commercial building’s construction. Dillard’s as Sike Center Mall in Wichita Falls was his pride. Grant worked almost 50 years in this vocation.

Grant served on the Antelope School Board and was an active member of the Antelope Methodist Church, where he was President of the Board of Directors.

Granvel was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Sarah, parents, and brothers, Oscar Earl, Burel, Charlie, and Robert.

Grant loved his family and he is survived by his son Gary Wells and wife Linda; grandson Mark Wells and wife Jenny; great-granddaughters Ashley and Kristen Wells; great great granddaughter, Sutton; brother Johnny Porter; sisters Earlene Wright and Betty Thornton; along with a host of nephews and nieces.
