He was a Staff Sargent in World War II, 104th Infantry Division, known as The Timberwolves, that fought in the European theater. He described his military service as his duty to God and our country and was awarded the Good Conduct medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star.

He married Juanita Montgomery on March 30, 1940 in Oklahoma City. Vernon, a mechanic by trade, owned his own shop and station in the 1950’s in Oklahoma City. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, he worked as Grain Elevator Superintendent for two grain companies in the Amarillo, Texas area.  He loved his work, retiring at the age of 72. He was known for his quirky sense of humor and was kind, generous, honest, brave and true.  He loved the simple things in life, always had a smile on his face, and cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and friends.

Vernon is survived by his daughter Jan Bruton Land and Rick Land; granddaughter Suzanne Saenz, great grandchildren Matthew and Amanda, and three great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many good friends. Vernon is preceded in death by his wife Juanita in 2004, and his son Gary Vernon Bruton in 2005.
