Search for new JISD superintendent begins

By the end of January, Jacksboro ISD officials are hoping to have a new superintendent in place.

Dwain Milam announced his retirement at the Sept. 13 meeting after six years with the district. Milam has agreed to stay on until Feb. 28, depending on what the potential new hire requires.

City officials looking into ARPA spending

City of Jacksboro officials and council members are looking into ways to spend just over $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

City Manager Mike Smith said the first half of the funds or $543,146 arrived last month, with the second payment in the same amount expected to arrive in August 2022. The monies can be spent on helping businesses, replacing lost revenue due to COVID-19 among other things, Smith explained during the Sept. 13 council meeting. The funds must be spent by Dec. 31, 2024.

Superintendent Milam to retire

Jacksboro ISD Superintendent Dwain Milam has spent nearly every day since he was five years old going to school. That will end before the completion of this school year.

Milam announced his retirement after six years at JISD during a regular board meeting Sept. 13. He plans on staying through this spring when the board will hopefully have someone hired.

Milam says the decision comes with a lot of thought.

“I sought God’s guidance,” Milam said. “The decision was made with a lot of peace from God that it was indeed the right decision.”

“Just seeing it brought back tears as there must have been 40-50 people who had been helped by what we’re doing,” Callie said. “It just about brought me to my knees and did bring on some tears.”
