Pippin event Saturday

Wed, 09/14/2022 - 12:00 am

Bailey Pippin lived 14 years, 11 months and three days before being called to Heaven. In his cousin Dillon Orr’s eyes, “he completed his purpose on Earth earlier than the rest of us.”

Bailey, according to his mom, Callie, was always the first to go sit with someone sitting alone, give someone money who was a little short on funds and just be everyone else’s supporter.

“He supported those who were being bullied,” Callie said. “He loved the outdoors. Hunting, exploring. All that stuff.”

Callie and her family believe it’s time to carry on Bailey’s legacy of giving with their 9th annual Bailey Pippin Scholarship event Sept. 17 at the Jermyn Community Center. The event has always been held the 3rd Saturday in September, Callie noted.

“We’ve had a lot of callers this year asking when the event is,” Callie said with a laugh. “It’s always the same time of year.”

In the previous eight years of the event, 89 $1,000 scholarships have been given out to area high school seniors.

The event has raised more money each year, making $36,000 last year alone. Earnings have gone over $100,000 total, Callie said.

As usual, it’s an all day event at the community center this Saturday. A full concession stand inside the center will begin serving breakfast tacos and other goodies at 7 a.m. The concession stand will be open throughout the day.

Registration for the 5K Run/Fun Run will begin then as well with running to start at 8 a.m. Cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt.

After that is the popular skeet shooting competition. Last year, 55 shooters took part in the event which begins at 9 a.m.

The annual volleyball tournament will not take place this year due to lack of participation last year. A corn hole tournament is being held with registration, which is $50, starting at 9 a.m. with the event commencing at noon.

So many teams took part last year the event went into the evening hours. Bags will be provided and those bags must be used, Callie said.

After all the events, the day will wind down with music. No dance will be held, but if the mood suits you...

The family just wants everyone to come out and have a good time, remember Bailey’s legacy and know they’re helping out a wonderful cause.
