Jacksboro ISD officials received a clean audit, or free from issues, during the Monday, Dec. 12 school board meeting.

Mike Edgin, of the firm of Edgin, Parkman, Fleming, and Fleming gave the annual financial report, commending Business Manager Christy Thomas and the financial staff for doing a great job. The district is keeping a 4.5 month fund balance in its coffers well within the 4-6 month balance required by the State, Edgin said.

4-Day School Survey

It looks like the district will remain on a regular five-day a week schedule. The district had opted to look into a four day a week schedule during the next school year after other area districts decided to consider it.

Burnett said after seeing the results of a staff survey where only 29% were in favor of a 4-day week and 31% in favor of keeping a traditional calendar, it was decided to keep the traditional calendar for the 20232024 school year.

Burnett said a large number did opt for a hybrid calendar with more days off. Burnett said having a Fall Break in October will be considered by the district calendar committee when it meets in January. A proposed 2023-24 calendar is expected to be considered at the board’s February meeting.

Tornado Shelter Approved

In its continuing efforts to keep everyone safe at the district, approval was given to spend $134,000 on a tornado shelter at the Administration/Child Care building. Superintendent Brad Burnett said parents have expressed concern about the need for a shelter. The district will have to apply to the city for permitting before the shelter can be placed on district ground.

“It’s a big number but you can’t put a price on life saving,” Burnett said.

Campus Reports

During their individual campus reports, both Jacksboro Elementary School Principal Michael Qualls and Jacksboro Middle School Principal Jackie Hamilton were pleased with the UIL district academic results with both schools finishing second among three teams competing in meets Jacksboro hosted Friday, Dec. 2.

Enrollments among the three schools are staying relatively steady. Jacksboro High School Principal Starla Sanders spoke about the Cheerleaders winning an National Cheerleaders Association competition Monday, Dec. 11 in Dallas and an Adulting 101 program which was held last month. Students learned a number of different things such as balancing a checkbook, changing a tire and other items.
