History camp Aug. 2-3

Wed, 07/13/2022 - 5:00 am

The Jack County Museum is pleased to offer “History Happens 2022,” a mini-summer camp for students who are 6 – 12 years of age. There is no charge to attend the camp, but preregistration is required. Lunch will be provided both days, and all campers will also receive T-shirts. The camp will take place at the Jack County Museum at 241 W. Belknap on Tuesday, August 2nd and at Fort Richardson State Park on Wednesday, August 3rd.

History Happens 2022 is an educationally enriching and age-appropriate minicamp, which is made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. During this year’s camp, campers will learn about the Indian Wars in Jack County.

History Camp instruction aligns with several TEKS objectives. Pat Ritchie will be the lead educator for this camp and served in this capacity for History Camp in 2018 and 2019.

Camp will be a twoday course, with lunch and snacks provided. Certified teachers will serve in a volunteer capacity to provide a quality educational experience to the campers.

The students will also participate in crafts that reinforce the lesson plans and objectives of the camp. Curriculum will include hands-on learning, visual learning, and oral presentations with age-appropriate lessons, and will also target TEKS. Local ranchers and historians will provide demonstrations and share historical anecdotes highlighting Jack County history.

Day 1 will have campers experiencing pioneer life during the period of the Indian Wars as described above and will include a lecture and PowerPoint presentation.

Day 2 will include a tour of Fort Richardson led by a Park Interpreter, and a presentation about Native American culture including customs and music.

Registration packets are available at Gladys Johnson Ritchie Public Library located at 626 W. College Street, or by email at jackcomuseumtx@yahoo.com. Space is limited.

Spots are reserved upon the receipt of the complete packet by the Jack County Museum. The application deadline is July 26.
