Churches host VBS

Wed, 07/06/2022 - 5:00 am

It’s a summer tradition in Texas

Nearly every church, no matter the size, has a Vacation Bible School at some point every summer. Pastors and church staff try not to have two schools on the same week.

Both Live Oak Baptist Church, Southwest Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Jacksboro had their schools last month to very good crowds each night. Jack Maddox at FBC said he had nearly 100 students a night with the church doing a camp for the first time in recent years.

“All the churches have had good numbers so far,” Maddox said. “We had a lot of help with both adults and teenage leaders for the younger ones, which you like to see.”

Pastor Adam Lazarine at Live Oak Baptist Church says the church’s VBS was successful averaging about 50 children a night. What made the VBS a success was having workers to lead the children.

Lazarine said parents, grandparents and guardians really want the children in their care to know God and for their kids to know scripture and the school can do that.

Children have been known to hop from one school to the next for thew food and fellowship with other kids and their friends. One youngster said he liked going to different VBS because “you can learn something different and in a different way by attending different ones.”

“We’re not trying to teach the Baptist way here,” Maddox offered. “We’re trying to teach how to know Christ plain and simple.”

There are still other events going on this summer. First United Methodist Church will be having their VBS “Discovery on Adventure Island” July 25-29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for children in Pre-K through 5th grade.

The event will close with a family fun night with hot dogs, snow cones and a water slide.

Bible Baptist Church will be having a one-day event later this summer.
