BRYSON – Jack County history was made Friday morning when 2022 Bryson High School graduate Windsor Godfrey became State FFA President.
She’s the third officer from the county as Perrin had a vice president in 1967-68 and Jacksboro another in 1995-96, according to Bryson FFA advisor Jesse Laine. Godfrey is the first president of the 156,000 member organization.
Godfrey is only the 10th female president to serve as Texas FFA President since women were allowed membership into the national organization in 1969.
She was a announced as President for the 2022-2023 school year during the State Convention in Fort Worth last week. During a week of interviews on a multitude of subjects in several formats, including one-on-one, and speech giving in front of 15,000 people, Godfrey rose to the top. A lot of the work came during the school year and after graduation.
Laine said he and Godfrey worked every day after graduation on some things she would need for the State Convention. She received help from Bryson ISD Superintendent Greg London, Bryson Student Services Director Debbie Hearne and Darren Francis from Region 9, who helped her with education and school finance
“She was well versed in that, thanks to Darren,” Laine said.
State officers must be graduates of their school and can maintain their FFA membership for up to three years after graduation.
Godfrey, who was valedictorian of her class and scheduled to attend West Texas A&M University, will defer a year of college. She and her first vice president will travel the state speaking to students at more than 400 schools, visiting three to four schools each day and traveling 60,000 miles talking about FFA, Laine said.
Laine said Godfrey had her doubts early in the week, but said all she wanted to do is “give it 100% and her all along with being 100% genuine and real.”
Godfrey was an area officer during the 2021- 2022 school year.
Laine said he couldn’t be anymore proud of Godfrey, and the same goes for the community. Talk of a community celebration is being discussed. A group of Bryson supporters have chipped in to buy her a new phone so she can take pictures of her travels across the state.
“Everyone around here wants to help and is so very proud of her,” Laine said.
