BISD board approves budget

Wed, 09/07/2022 - 5:00 am

Bryson ISD school board members approved the 2022-23 budget and tax rate during a meeting Monday, Aug. 29.

The district’s tax rate dropped slightly, from $1.40 to $1.38 per $100 of valuation. The interest and sinking rate remained the same at $0.44 per $100 valuation, with maintenance and operations dropping from $0.9634 to $0. 9441.

The $3,279,153 budget is balanced, according to BISD Superintendent Greg London. That is significant as many districts are adopting deficit budgets throughout the state and simply not deciding to go without some things to save money, London explained.

The district is looking to add some security items but is waiting for the State to release money to the districts before deciding what to do.

The district’s certified values went from $193.7 million to $197.7 million, or just under a $4 million increase. District enrollment is increasing with Principal Gary Kirby stating an enrollment of 259, but two more being added the next day.

London said the district receives about $6,200 per student. He said 260 enrollment “is a good number for us.”

London also told the board the district is getting good interest on its fund balance now, to the tune of around $10,000-$11,000 per month.

The new budget goes into effect Oct. 1.

Inothernews, boardmembers approved an agreement with Faith Community Health Services to share an athletic trainer.

London told the board BISD and Perrin- Whitt CISD will each share the trainer, each contributing 25% of the cost, with FCH contributing the remainder. The districts will share the trainer with each having him for home games. If both teams are at home on a certain night during the school year, they will rotate having the trainer.

“( Head Football) coach (Bill Reed) wants this now. He doesn’t want to make the call on concussion protocol,” London said.

• Members of the Bryson 4-H Club spoke to the board, telling them what they are involved in through the club. Some of the club’s 30 members show animals throughout the year, while others compete in food or other competitions. Some compete in forms of judging.

Club President Dalton Birdwell presented the board with the Jack County Friends of 4-H Award for the support the district and board gives to their students.
