World's best cliff divers return to Possum Kingdom

Thu, 06/02/2016 - 11:11 am

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series arrives in Texas for the third consecutive year to kick off this season’s global competition

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, the world’s most exhilarating high diving competition, returns to the U.S. June 3-4. Hell’s Gate at Possum Kingdom Lake will host the event for the third consecutive year and is once again the lone U.S. stop in the global series. This year the World Series will be larger than ever, with nine total stops and seven stops for the women’s division, expanded from three last year. Texas will be the first stop in the worldwide tour for the very first time. This year thousands of spectators on boats, kayaks and paddleboards are expected to take in the action in what will once again be a floating-room-only crowd.

The competition will see divers in the men’s division leap off of Hell’s Gate from 91 feet above the water and reach speeds of 55 mph. Competitors will include the dominant Gary Hunt of the UK who will look to continue to wow crowds in the states. Last year in Texas, the five-time Men’s Division Champion set the record for highest scoring dive in the history of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in what was a nearly flawless showcase. Top-ranked U.S. men’s diver, David Colturi will look to knock Hunt off the podium by improving on his 2015 fifth place finish with a strong start in Possum Kingdom Lake.

Diving from the still awe-inducing height of 67 feet, the women’s division will be led by two-time Red Bull Cliff Diving Women’s Division Champion and San Antonio resident, Rachelle Simpson. The former gymnast has won her home state’s stop each of the past two years en route to women’s division titles, and will be looking for the three-peat. Rachelle and the rest of the women’s division are set to embark on their biggest year since the women’s division was introduced in 2014, preparing to compete in seven total stops, more than double the three women’s stops in 2014 and 2015.
