Lady Eagles fly past Tigerettes in sweep

Wed, 09/22/2021 - 10:49 am

In the midst of a tough season, there are always positives to be found.

Such was the case in game two of Jacksboro’s 11-25, 15-25, 9-25 loss to 6th-ranked Holliday Lady Eagles. After a tough loss in the opener, where the squad had just four serving points from Kylie Tullous (two), Avery Bennett and Chloe Hart to round things out, the Tigerettes fell behind 4-0 in game two.

Hart began the turnaround with a single point as did Tullous, the latter aided by a Rylee Mathis kill. Tullous’ sister Brailyn continued the comeback with another two-point run, including an ace, to draw within 7-8. Mathis would tie the game at nine after a service break.

Junior Erin Jonas’ kill broke serve and set the stage for Lilli Gonzales who served up two straight for the Tigerettes’ first lead at 12-10. The squads exchanged points before Holliday went on a run to retake the lead.

The hostesses used a Jonas kill and a Mathis dink to stay close before a lengthy string of Lady Eagle points broke the game open. Tigerette Coach Kelli Barnett said the middle game was definitely the highlight of the 61-minute match.

“We had no missed serves in that game two, which is something we’ve been working on,” the first-year mentor said. “I liked the way our defense played fearless. We definitely played up tonight and learned a lot in the loss.”

In game three, Kylie Tullous had both serving points while Mathis broke a nine-point skein with a kill to open the game.

Jacksboro hosted Henrietta Tuesday night. Details from that match were too late for press time.
