Pirates post 44-35 win over Woodson Cowboys
Woodson gave visiting Perrin all it wanted Friday, Jan. 10, including taking a one-point lead into the fourth quarter against the state-ranked Pirates.
Cowgirls fall to Ladycats, 57-10
Coming off a 38-17 win over Garner in its previous game, Bryson’s girls basketball team came into its Friday, Jan. 10 match-up in Newcastle ready to go above .500 in district play.
Perrin girls fall to Newcastle
After a convincing win over Bryson in its district opener, Perrin’s girls basketball team headed home Tuesday, Jan. 7 to face defending state champion Newcastle.
The Lady Pirates held tough for a while but solid defense by the Lady ‘Cats led to easy baskets and enabled the visitors to post a 55-33 win. Perrin is now 10-11 overall and 1-1 in district with Newcastle going to 13-8 and 2-0.

Perrin boys rout Newman Academy
Finding a shooting groove can take some time, even for the best of teams.
Perrin’s boys basketball team has had its issues throughout the season finding the basket but still managed a 17-5 record heading into a Tuesday, Jan. 7 contest with visiting Newman Academy. The Warriors jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Pirates found their shooting niche, closing the first quarter on a 28-5 run.

Athletes of the Year selected for 2024
Cannon Valenzuela of Jacksboro, Jaydah McComack of Bryson and Jack McCormick of Perrin have been selected as the Jacksboro Herald- Gazette’s Athletes of the Year for their overall athletic performances in 2024.
Busy sports year in review
Much like on the news side, 2024 was an exciting year for Jack County sports, with several teams going deep into the playoffs and a number of athletes signing national letters of intent. In no particular order, here are some of the top local sports events of 2024.
Tigers win, Tigerettes fall
Jacksboro garnered a split of home games with Bowie. The Tigers posting a 46-44 win and the Tigerettes suffering a 44-42 loss.
Tigers place several on All-District squads
After a three round trip into the Class 3A Division II playoffs, several Jacksboro Tigers were named to the All-District 6-3A Division II teams. Superlatives Cannon Valenzuela was named Most Valuable Player with senior Wade Treadway named most valuable offensive lineman with Will Treadway named newcomer of the year.
Pierce, Richerson, Walker named Athletes of the Week
Each week, the Jacksboro Herald-Gazette will recognize one athlete from each Jack County school as the Herald’s Athletes of the Week. The Herald’s Athletes of the Week are Jameson Pierce of Bryson, Hayden Walker of Jacksboro, and Ryan Richerson of Perrin.
