Bryson’s boys basketball team gained a season sweep of visiting Newcastle with a 54-44 win over the Bobcats.
The Cowboys looked to take control early, getting out to a 10-4 lead. Three points each from Maurice Reiter and Ben Bennett got the ‘Pokes going.
Newcastle finally got in the game with baskets and free throws from Keaton Newland helping to cut the deficit to 16-14 after one quarter.
Newcastle continued its roll through district play Tuesday, Jan. 28 with a 57-17 win at Bryson.
The Lady ‘Cat defense frustrated the Cowgirls early and often, allowing Bryson just three first quarter shots while coming through with several steals. Those steals enabled Newcastle got get out to a 7-0 lead two minutes in and never look back on baskets from Kenna Mahan and Emma Hawkins. Camren Mallory 3-pointers extended the lead into double figures.
While free throw shooting is not something basketball teams focus on, it sure helped Perrin on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
With shots simply not falling in the first half but the Pirates being aggressive and getting fouled, Perrin was 10-16 at the free throw line despite shooting 26% (7-of-27) from the field. That enabled the Pirates to lead 28-17 at the half over county rival Bryson, which had shot 8-of-17 from the floor and did not attempt a free throw.
A 17-0 third quarter run Tuesday, Jan. 21 by host Perrin enabled the Lady Pirates to break open a close game and take a 45-23 win over county rival Bryson.
Perrin looked to take control early, getting out to a 9-2 lead barely two minutes in on buckets by McKieran Murphy, Callie Weddle and Baylee Meadows. Six points by Cowgirl Eleanor Neudorf cut the deficit to one.
