Taking advantage of an opponent’s mistakes isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Jacksboro’s boys were down eight, 28-20, at halftime to Nocona Jan. 19. The Indians went on to shoot 2-21 from the field in the final two quarters with Jacksboro converting 8-26 from the floor at the same time.
Surprisingly, Jacksboro would tie the game just once, thanks to a terrific second half at the free throw line for the visitors who held on for a 43-41 win at Tiger Gym.
Jacksboro ends lap one of District 7-3A at 1-5 and 6-7 overall. Nocona closes out the first round of District 7-3A action at 3-3 and 8-10 overall.
A Jordan Yount outback early in the third had a fired up student section on their feet and a fan base smelling blood in the water. Another Yount bucket along with hoops from Rylan Chalmers and Landon Davenport would close out the Tiger offense for the frame to help Jacksboro get within one, 31-30 to open the fourth quarter.
Nocona was 3-4 at the stripe in the third quarter to keep the hosts at bay. The Tigers would get within one twice, including a Chalmers jumper with 4:13 to go at 35-34. A Davenport drive into the lane tied the game at 36 with 3:13 remaining.
It would be was close as the Purple would get as the Indians buried four free throws to go up 40-36 with 1:34 left. The Indians added two more in the waning seconds for a six-point lead.
Jacksboro missed four shots down the stretch as putbacks wouldn’t do the trick. Yount got the Tigers within four and Chalmers buried a three at the buzzer but it wasn’t enough.
Nocona looked to put away the hosts early, getting out to a 9-3 lead barely three minutes in, aided by a pair of inside buckets from Ryder Oswald.The hosts shot 2-14 from the field in the first while the Indians were 7-9 from the floor, which enabled Nocona to take a 15-4 lead after one.
A 13-point visitor advantage was nearly cut in half in the second quarter as Chalmers, Paul Shackelford, Devon Green and Yount helped Jacksboro get within 28-20.
Yount had 13 and Chalmers 12 to pace the Purple.
