Perrin’s varsity volleyball team got itself into some holes against visiting Bryson but the Lady Pirates held tough Tuesday, Oct. 8 and picked up the win in the district opener for both teams 25-16, 25-23, 26-24.
Perrin Coach Rebekah Bland said she liked her squad’s fight when behind, which is what she thought got the Lady Pirates through.
“They don’t quit. I’ll say that much,” Bland said. “Our inconsistencies are going longer than I would prefer but it was a good match. I thought we played well overall.”
Perrin found itself down 14-18 in game two but the Lady Pirates broke serve and used a six-point serving run from Lucchese Reilly to go up 21-18. Perrin had led most of the game but a three-point string from Bryson’s Johanna Herpeche had helped the Cowgirls pull away briefly.
Bryson gave Perrin all it wanted throughout the match, even tying game two at 22 on Eleanor Neudorf’s serving points. Perrin broke serve, using a Kennadee Langham ace and a break in serve to win the game.
Bryson went up 5-2 in game three on points from Morgan Eberle, Herpeche and Neudorf. Perrin tied the game at five on two McKieran Murphy tallies.
A Jaydah McComack kill and two serving points by her put the Cowgirls up 8-5. Bryson led 13-9 until Perrin stormed by with a four-point string by freshman Mackenzie Green which gave Perrin its first lead of the game at 14-13. Neudorf’s block and a pair of Herpeche points, aided by a Neudorf kill, put the Cowgirls up 16-14.
Neudorf’s ace gave Bryson an 18-15 lead before a Langham kill set the table for a five-point Reilly run to go up 22-10 and force Bryson Coach Mandy Cernosek into a timeout.
The respite worked as serving points by Braydee Thorne and Morgan Eberle helped by frontcourt help from Joslyn Moore helped Bryson tie the game at 24. It wasn’t to be for Bryson, as Perrin broke serve and Green served up the match’s final point.
Green staked the Lady Pirates to a 6-0 lead in game one. Bryson kept things close with pairs of points from Neudorf and McComack to get within three. The Cowgirls would get no closer.
Perrin and Bryson will have a rematch at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 in Bryson.
