While not having its best night shooting, Perrin got out to a quick start Tuesday, Nov. 12 against visiting Eastland and cruised to a 72-34 win over the Mavericks.

In their season opener, the Pirates shot 39% from the floor while holding Eastland to just 27%. Perrin coach Todd McCormick said there are some things his squad needs to work on.

“I didn’t think we rebounded well tonight and offensively, we didn’t shoot well, but overall I thought our defense was good,” McCormick said. “Still, we got the win which is always good.”

Case Lambert got Perrin off to a torrid start, pacing a 16-0 run to close the first quarter with a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Jack McCormick added a pair of baskets and free throws as well, as he and Lambert combined for all 19 Perrin points in the opening frame.

Eastland missed its last eight shots of the quarter, allowing the Pirates to take a 19-3 lead after one.

Lambert and McCormick received offensive help from Cole Keeney’s pair of baskets to help the Pirates lead by 24. Perrin’s aggressive defense allowed the squad fast break opportunities which led to easy baskets.

Perrin also did a tremendous job offensive rebounding, coming through with 14 of them in the first half. The Pirates outrebounded Eastland on both sides of the court 24-8 in the first half.

With the game going Perrin’s way, bench players saw significant playing time in the second quarter. Reserve Benny Samanmit came through with a buzzer-beating jump shot for a 41-16 lead at the half.

McCormick cut through the Eastland defense in the second half using his speed for easy layups which pushed the Pirate lead to 30. Ryan Richerson used his size inside for two offensive rebounds and a pair of baskets.

Lambert continued his hot hand from outside as well, converting his fifth 3-pointer. Perrin had its best shooting quarter, making 7-of-13 shots to keep the Pirates up 57-27 to start the fourth frame.

McCormick led Perrin with 34 points with Lambert tossing in 20, 11 of which came in the first quarter.
