Tigers turning things around with wins
WINDTHORST – After a slow start to the season, Jacksboro Baseball Coach Blake Belcher said his squad may now be ready for District 8-3A action.
After a 1-7-1 start to the season, the Tigers have won three of their last four, including a 5-2 win over Stamford to close the Windthorst Tournament here Saturday afternoon. Jacksboro is now 4-8-1 for the season.
Belcher says shoring up a defense that was averaging more than three errors a game for the first two weekends has been key.
“We’ve done a better job defensively, but it wasn’t like we were seeing a lot of junk pitchers either,” Belcher said. “We were seeing the aces of a lot of (Class) 4A and 5A schools too. I think we’re ready for district.”
What the veteran mentor liked seeing in Saturday’s finale was his squad winning a close game against solid competition. In his second start on the hill, junior Lathan Lowrance scattered four hits and struck out six and walked a pair over five innings.
“He pitched well against a good team, which you like to see,” Belcher said.
