Tigers end season with win

An up and down year for Jacksboro’s boys basketball team ended on the upswing Feb. 17 as the Tigers took control early and finished the season with a 58-37 win over visiting Millsap at Tiger Gym.

Jacksboro finished at 4-10 in District 7-3A, including a sweep of Millsap, and 10-14 overall. Millsap ends at 2-12 and 5-24.

The Tigers got out to a 6-0 lead, paced by four Wheelis Green tallies. Millsap’s Hunter Matthews buried a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game at six.

Jacksboro ended the quarter on an 11-2 string, Jordan Yount’s three baskets and a free throw pacing the closing. Green and Landon Davenport each had buckets as well as Jacksboro closed the first with 7-of-10 shooting and took a 17-8 lead after one.

Matthews received no offensive support from his teammates, scoring the Bulldogs’ first 10 points which enabled the Tigers to build the lead to 17 midway through the second. Senior Seth Isbell had a couple of baskets sandwiched around a Yount hoop.

Green’s basket and seven free throws capped the 15-4 run and pushed the lead to 20 with 1:19 left in the half. A pair of Millsap buckets in the final minute brought the visitors within 21, 37-16, at the half.

After shooting 52% from the floor in the first two quarter, Jacksboro cooled off shooting in the third. The Tigers were still able to extend their lead on a pair of Brayden Roberts buckets with Green and Davenport helping to pad the lead to 44-21.

Millsap closed the third frame on a 9-2 skein, using 3-pointers by Jace Davis and Matthews to pull the visitors within 46-30. After opening the second half on 4-of-6 shooting, the Tigers missed their last seven floor attempts as Jacksboro went into the fourth quarter on a bit of a cold snap.

Buckets from Davenport and Isbell early in the fourth seemed to get things rolling again for the Tigers who held on for the win. Seniors Ty Rodgers and Kyler Kenvin had baskets as did Green down the stretch.

Green led three Tigers in double figures with 20 points. Isbell added 11 and Yount 10 for Jacksboro.
