Tigerettes sweep Ballinger in area playoffs
STEPHENVILLE – Jacksboro’s softball team had its bats rolling in their area round matchup with Ballinger and was able to take advantage of enough Lady Cat errors to post 5-4 and 5-1 wins in the best-of-three series.
The Tigerettes will move into the regional quarterfinals to face the winner of Holliday-Clyde this week. Further details were not available as of press time.
Brief summaries of both games follow:
Game 2: Jacksboro 5, Ballinger 1
The Tigerettes scored runs in each of the first two innings and used a 13-hit attack to cruise to the win.
Jacksboro stranded 13 runners in the contest but freshman pitcher Shelby Seaberry held the Lady ‘Cats to just five hits, the squad’s only run coming on a fifth-inning homer.
Jacksboro scored one in the first as singles by Kylie Tullous and Rylee Mathis and a one out hit batter loaded the sacks. Teagan Reynolds plated Tullous with a sacrifice fly to get on the board but a strikeout ended the inning.
In the Tigerette second, Maddy Morgan was safe on a shortstop’s error. Charlie Phariss followed by reaching on another miscue. The pair coming home as a throw to retire Phariss went down the right field line, extending the lead to 3-0.
A two-out walk to Mathis kept the drive alive but a groundout to second prevented further damage.
Avery Bennett opened the Tigerette fifth with a walk with Reynolds laying down a bunt single. Phariss later stroked a two-out single to plate Bennett for a 4-0 lead.
After the Jenna Battle homer in the bottom of the fifth, Jacksboro got the run back in the top of the sixth. Kylie Tullous led off with an infield single with Seaberry drawing a one out walk. Bennett followed with an infield single to load the bases. Reynolds came through again with a single to plate Tullous but the throw home caught courtesy runner Lyla Pankey for the second out. Lily Perez followed with a single but the throw home was in time to retire Bennett to end the frame.
In the Tigerette seventh Payton Nail singled but was forced at second in place of Phariss. Brailyn Tullous was safe on a first baseman’s drop with Kylie Tullous loading the sacks with an infield single. Another trio were stranded as the next two hitters flew out.
Game 1: Jacksboro 5, Ballinger 4
The Lady ‘Cats led 3-1 but a four-run third inning allowed Jacksboro back into the game and the squad took the opener.
Kylie Tullous was 2-2 at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Seaberry, who got the win in the circle, had two RBIs to lead the squad.
Also coming through with hits were Mathis, Bennett, Reynolds, Phariss and Brailyn Tul lous.
Seaberry scattered six hits in the circle and struck out eight with just one walk.
