Tigerettes drop 7-3A opener to Mustangs, 35-18
Visiting Wichita Falls City View jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first half and made it stick in a 35-18 win over Jacksboro in both schools’ 7-3A girls basketball opener.
Neither team came with their offensive game showing, City View alone missing its first eight shots from the field before finding the basket with 3:35 left in the first. Kira Taylor and Emery Brandon closed the frame with baskets as the Lady Mustangs buried three of their final five attempts after the slow start.
Jacksboro kept its patience, only taking nine shots in the frame, but had trouble getting the ball down low to junior post Erin Jonas. With that not working, the Tigerettes tried firing three-pointers with no success.
City View led 6-0 after one behind just 23% shooting (3-13).
City View’s press frustrated the Tigerettes throughout the game but the 2-2-1 press was able to generate some steals for easy baskets. City View also benefited from Jacksboro fouls to the tune of 7-1 in the first half and 14-4 for the game to take a 14-0 lead. The Tigerettes finally snapped the run with a Rachael Chalmers jumper with 3:37 left. A nifty pass to Jonas from Avery Bennett finally found the mark and Jacksboro was within 10.
