Cowgirls remain perfect in district play

PERRIN – Most teams go through cold streaks in a game, be it for part of a quarter at most.

That looked pretty good for Perrin’s Lady Pirate basketball squad, who went through a more than two quarter span Friday night without hitting a bucket. That enabled visiting Bryson to take control of the game and cruise to a 38-18 win over Perrin at Pirate Gym.

Bryson goes to 3-0 in district and 16-8 overall while Perrin slips to 1-2 in district. Cowgirl Coach Rusty Jones said his squad’s defense paid dividends.

“We worked hard on our press and made sure they didn’t get any good looks,” Jones said. “This was a big road win.”

Bryson, which shot 29% from the floor (14-49), got off on the right foot. Riley Valliant had a start worthy of her name, scoring a pair of buckets in the first 55 seconds for a 4-0 lead.

Valliant had nine points and 12 rebounds in the post. Perrin used an 8-0 run on 3-pointers from Kelli Tucker and Karson Collie as well as a Tucker bucket for their lone lead.

Perrin missed their last five shots of the frame, which allowed Bryson to go on a 15-0 string. Buckets by Brinkley Richardson, Tracy Hauger, Valliant and Kyla Jones allowed the Cowgirls to take a 19-8 lead late in the first before a Tucker free throw ended the quarter with Bryson leading by 10.

Both teams went into a deep freeze in the second frame, Bryson missed its first 12 shots from the field before Richardson and Jones had baskets in the final minute. After a Kamryn Staggs basket for the Lady Pirates, the squad missed its final three shots of the third, all six in the fourth and the first 13 attempts in the fourth quarter.

Richardson had 14 points and Jones 10 for the Cowgirls. Collier and Tucker each had six points for Perrin.
