Teen Boot Camp starts July 6

Thu, 06/29/2017 - 12:13 pm

A successful program started by Faith Community Hospital last year has been expanded with the opening of the Swan Family Wellness Center.

Teen Boot Camp will run Tuesdays and Thursday from 1-2 p.m.  through the month of July at the Wellness Center behind the hospital. Wellness Director Joe Copeland said the program is completely free for those in grades 6-12 and had about 25-30 kids last year attending consistently. With the opening of the center, Copeland is hoping for more this year.

“We’d definitely like to see around 30-40 or more this time around,” Copeland said. “We have a lot more equipment in the new center, so there will be more barbells, more kettlebells, more of everything.”

As was the focus last year, the camp aims to provide a variety of wellness goals including strength, growth, increased confidence, weight loss, healthy eating and positive lifestyle changes. Ways to improve nutrition will be handed out with challenges given to the participants with prizes awarded to those who lose the most weight during the four weeks.

“What we wanted to do is teach the foundations of exercise to help those who are going through athletics at the school and even those who aren’t,” Copeland said. “Maybe give them a chance to prepare or just to continue good, healthy exercise.”
