Track athletes heading to Austin

Thu, 05/11/2017 - 9:32 am

Nerves can be expected when heading to anything at the State level.

Jacksboro seniors Riley Rollans and Kaylea Maples have experienced the spotlight that is the State Track and Field Meet, which takes place this weekend at UT’s Myers Track and Field Stadium in Austin. The pair, along with Kade Weldon, will all be competing at 8 a.m. Saturday, the boys in the discus and Maples in the triple jump.

Maples qualified last year and admitted nerves kept her from doing her best. She says that won’t be an issue this year.

“I’m excited because it’s my second time to go (to State),” Maples said. “I was nervous last time but this time  I can show what I have. I’m definitely ready to go.”

Maples had a personal best of 37’2” at the Region I-3A Meet two weeks ago, which gave her a second-place finish. She presently sits sixth in the state in the event. She says working with two other seniors has helped her in her event.

“Before meets, we talk to each other and wish each other luck,” Maples said. “It’s been good for all of us.”
