Perrin begins search for new superintendent

PERRIN — School board members here began the arduous process of hiring a new Superintendent to replace John Kuhn, who resigned to become the superintendent at Mineral Wells ISD.

After a discussion with Region 9 officials, the board voted unanimously during Tuesday evening’s board meeting to use Region 9 as its superintendent search firm. Kuhn told the board he is expected to be offered a contract Monday after a 21-day waiting period as the MWISD’s lone finalist. Kuhn would then officially turn in his resignation and get the ball rolling in hiring a replacement in Perrin. 

City explains notices on water treatment issues

Jacksboro water customers should soon receive a notice in the mail concerning issues with the water.

City Manager Mike Smith explained the notice to city council members at their meeting this week.

“Invariably, you all are going to get asked and I wanted you to know where we’re coming from,” he said.

Smith said quarterly state testing revealed higher levels of disinfection by-products than allowed. 

According to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, disinfection by-products are formed when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic carbon.

It’s current superintendent, John Kuhn, was named the lone finalist for the top administrator job at Mineral Wells ISD at its board meeting June 6.

After a 21-day waiting period, the MWISD can formally offer him a contract.

PWCISD Board President Mike Withaeger said trustees will soon discuss how it will go about the search and finding a temporary replacement.

JHS band members see success at state

The Jacksboro High School Brass Ensemble competed at last week’s UIL Band State Competition and scored a 1st division rating, the highest possible.

The Brass Ensemble is made up of Jacob Hull, Filo Ponce, Macon Shoun, Skye Justus, Hoyt Nebgen and Alex McDaniel.

The Saxophone Ensemble consisting of Juliana Berry, Anna Hume, Maya Lewis and Jacob Wykes scored a 2nd division rating.  

Teen arrested following pursuit, wreck

A car chase Tuesday between Clay and Jack counties resulted in a rollover accident and one teenager in custody.

Jacksboro Police Chief Terry McDaniel said a Dodge SUV, an employee’s vehicle, was stolen from Greystone Park late Monday or early Tuesday. 

“Somebody saw which way it went and started looking for it,” McDaniel said. “It had run out of gas in Clay County near Henrietta.”

JISD welcomes new elementary principal

Jacksboro ISD’s new elementary principal is looking to put her skills to use in bringing up the campus from its improvement required accountability rating.

Tina Alvarado was selected by the board of trustees to lead the campus.

Alvarado comes to Jacksboro from Springtown ISD where she most recently served a the elementary curriculum coordinator.

“This is my philosophy. I know that God has a plan for me so doors open and close,” she said concerning why she chose to take the position in Jacksboro.

District outlines child care changes

Jacksboro ISD hashed out its new plan to keep losses for its child care center to a minimum at a school board meeting Monday.

For the last two years, the child care center has lost $46,993 and $51,689. Director Brittany Jackson said she believes with some changes to the program the loss could be $2,858 for the upcoming school year.

“We looked at the funding over the last couple of years and we just had a hard time getting that thing to break even,” said Superintendent Dwain Milam. “It’s not the kind of thing you want to make a profit on, but you want to break even.”
