New Kidd in town

Mike Kidd likes to take things to the next level. Whether it’s motorcycle racing or golf, he’s capable of committing huge amounts of energy and focus to his passions.

It is his love of golf combined with more than 40 years in the motorcycle racing industry, first as a professional racer and later as a promoter, that landed him in the management position of the Jacksboro Golf Course and Country Club.

JPD to launch pill drop-off

In the wake of the death by overdose of Jacksboro High School student Trey Pruitt, the Jacksboro Police Department is offering a program to safely remove unwanted medicines.

Chief Terry McDaniel said the department will host a pill drop-off program next month. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the Jack County Courthouse.

“We’ll cone off the parking spaces on the north side of the square. People can pull up and hand them to us and we’ll ship them off for destruction,” he said.

Jacksboro woman arrested in Martin County

The mother of Trey Pruitt, the Jacksboro High School student who was found dead at his home January 16, was arrested Friday night.

In a press release, Jack County Sheriff Tom Spurlock reported that Christy Pruitt was arrested in Martin County on warrants from Jack County for the offenses of delivery of a controlled substance or marijuana to a child and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Country club management contract in the works

During its regular meeting Monday, the Jacksboro City Council discussed a number of possible budget amendments.

City Manager Mike Smith reported that the Jacksboro Country Club is in need of some new equipment, first and foremost, a fairway mower. Smith said he got a quote for a new John Deere fairway mower for $26,000. Smith wanted to know if the council wanted to proceed with trying to get a mower for the country club despite the city currently in the process of seeking an outside management firm to take over operations of the club.

Interagency work nets 4 arrests

Sheriff Tom Spurlock announced via his Facebook page Saturday that an operation conducted in the county netted four arrests. The arrests took place between 6 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday involving the sheriff’s office, Jacksboro Police Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife.

One of the arrests was a felony on the charge of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

Commissioners to work with Jacksboro, Bryson

Discussion on working with the City of Jacksboro on a way to dispose of used and old tires was held before commissioners court Monday.

City Manager Mike Smith said city residents are allowed four or five times a year to make use of trailers at the convenience center west of town to dump items. Smith was receiving inquiries on what to do with old tires.

Bryson ISD evaluates teachers

BRYSON – School staff discussed the new Texas Teacher Evaluation System (TTES) during Monday night’s regular board meeting.

Superintendent David Stout, Principal Eric Wilson and Assistant Principal Jason Briles all conducted teacher walk throughs under the new system, which is supposed to give a “better, truer evaluation” of what a teacher is doing in the classroom. Wilson says that as time goes on, everyone is growing more comfortable with the process.

City, school candidate filing begins

Candidate filing began Wednesday for the May General Election which will include seats on Jacksboro and Bryson city councils and school boards.

On Bryson City Council seats currently held by Leticia Ford, Larry Nantz and Tommy Burris are up for election.

Jacksboro City Council will see Places 2 and 4 and the mayor’s seat up this May.

For Bryson ISD, school board seats currently held by T-Bob Hauger, Blake Brooks and Lynn Casteel are up and for Jacksboro, the seats currently held by trustees Jeff Lewis and Ken Swan are up for election.

Springer files final bills to complete ADA bill package

This week, Representative Drew Springer filed the remainder of his bills in support of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These measures do not create any new rules or regulations but rather help owners, architects, and builders to follow current ADA laws through the use of education and prior notifications for projects that qualify for ADA compliance.
