Early voting for Bryson city, school begins Monday

Bryson will host two elections in May. Early voting for seats on the Bryson City Council and Bryson ISD Board of Trustees begins Monday.

Candidates for the Jacksboro City Council and JISD School Board ran unopposed and those elections were cancelled.

For Bryson ISD, there were three seats up for election, Places 3, 4 and 5 currently held by T-Bob Hauger, Blake Brooks and Lynn Casteel, respectively. Both Hauger and Brooks are seeking re-election and no candidates have filed to run for their seats.

Federal judge says again, Texas voter ID law is discriminatory

AUSTIN — U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi on April 10 ruled the State of Texas has failed to prove that the voter identification law was not written with discriminatory intent and purpose.

The ruling came in response to a charge by the New Orleans-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that Judge Ramos re-examine the evidence and her 2015 findings in Veasey et al., plaintiffs, v. Greg Abbott et al., defendants.

Taking learning to a new level

Both Bryson ISD and Jacksboro ISD are celebrating success for recently achieving new levels of certification within the Marzano High Reliability Schools system.

Bryson ISD and Jacksboro Middle School achieved Level 1 certification near the end of the Fall 2016 semester. Both have now achieved Level 2 certification as the result of a visit from representatives from Marzano Research last Wednesday. Jacksboro Elementary and High School achieved Level 1 certification status as of last week.

Wednesday night fires investigated

State fire marshals were in Jacksboro Thursday and Friday investigating two fires that occurred within about an hour of each other Wednesday night.

Jacksboro Fire Chief Jeremy Jennings said firefighters were dispatched to the first fire at 322 N. 6th St. at approximately 8 p.m.

He said it was mostly a grass fire that barely reached the house.

The second fire was reported shortly after 9 p.m. in a mobile home at 401 W. College. That fire burned the front room, but Jennings said not much of the trailer was burned.

Perrin man sentenced to 30 years for theft

A Perrin man convicted of stealing nearly a quarter million dollars from several businesses and individuals in six counties was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday.

A Parker County jury convicted Charles Cody Lyon, 47, of an aggregated theft over $200,000 for at least 15 different transactions with victims in Jack, Parker, Leon, Fannin, Collin, Dallas and Jack counties.

Parker County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain said the case began when the DA’s office received a hot check case in September 2013.

Fire destroys West Belknap Street home

A fire destroyed a home on one of Jacksboro’s main thoroughfares Tuesday morning.

Jacksboro Fire Chief Jeremy Jennings said firefighters were dispatched to the 200 block of West Belknap at about 7:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found the fire burning in the front half of the house that used to be a dress shop.

Jennings said a woman and two teenagers were there when the fireman arrived, but he reported no injuries.

The fire burned for about two hours before the crews from Jacksboro, Bryson, Perrin and Jack County Rural dpeartments were about to put it out.
